Morpho opens new chip assembly unit in Brazil
Taubaté, December 9, 2011
José Genoino, special advisor to Brazil's Minister of Defense, Celso Amorim, visited Morpho's (Safran group) high-tech production site in Taubaté, Brazil, to view the newly opened chip module assembly line. An exclusive tour of the plant in the presence of Morpho's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Jean-Paul Jainsky, allowed Mr Genoino to witness the results of the company's latest investments and the high security standards in place on the site.
The assembly line rounds out an overall investment of more than 4 million euros in 2010 to enable on-site production of highly secure polycarbonate ID cards. This will strengthen Morpho's position as a leading local player in the smart card business. With an annual production capacity of up to 30 million modules, Morpho now has a full production chain for Brazil's new RIC* ID card, which will become the country's official means of identification in the next few years.
The new line also satisfies a long-term requirement of the Brazilian government, as it fulfills the stipulations of the tax incentive recognition law, Processo Produtivo Básico (PPB).
Paolo Villasco, Senior Vice President Sales, Americas at Morpho, said: "It was an honor for us to welcome Mr Genoino. We're delighted at the government's interest in our newproduction plant for highly secure ID cards."
