Iris Identification Technology from MorphoTrust USA Ranks Most Accurate, Faster, Smaller in Comprehensive NIST Test

May 29, 2012, Billerica, MA

Iris technology developed by MorphoTrust USA – a Morpho company part of the Safran group – proved to be the most accurate and much faster with a smaller file size than all nearest competitors, according to a recent test conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The NIST Iris Exchange (IREX) III study, released in April, tested and compared the performance of the iris algorithms from 11 commercial and academic providers using several million iris records. Iris technology is used to capture images to match against an extensive database to ensure individuals are who they claim to be when conducting transactions requiring a high level of confidence and trust.

IREX III constitutes the first public presentation of results for iris identification algorithms tested independently using an operational dataset. The study's four most accurate submissions belong to MorphoTrust and its technology demonstrated the best balance between speed, accuracy and size. In addition, IREX III revealed that MorphoTrust's iris technology is the best technology for large populations, specifically because it had stable accuracy as the database grew and the most accurate matching for the largest populations. In addition, MorphoTrust's technology was four times faster than the technology of the next most accurate vendor and had the smallest template of all highly accurate vendors.

MorphoTrust also previously achieved an unsurpassed combination of accuracy, speed and size in the IREX I test and performed the best on low quality data in IREX II. The MorphoTrust technology used in the IREX III test is the newest generation of iris technology planned for release in 2012 through the company's ABIS platform.

"Accuracy is what is most necessary to meet customer needs in iris recognition technology, followed by speed and size," said Dr. Brian Martin, MorphoTrust's director of biometric research. "NIST's comprehensive test demonstrates why MorphoTrust is the most widely trusted biometrics algorithm in the world."

Headquartered in Billerica, Mass., MorphoTrust's biometric technology is the standard for all US Department of Defense systems. It also provides the biometric technology for the Unique Identification Authority of India, which currently has over 150 million enrollments – the largest in the world - and the Indonesia National ID Program, which currently has over 50 million enrollments. The company employs approximately 1,100 people and operates over 1,200 ID service centers across the U.S., each staffed by certified trust agents. MorphoTrust currently provides driver license issuance solutions to 41 of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
