Morpho and Cascade Technologies to Test a Next Generation Security Solution at Glasgow International Airport
Paris, November 9, 2010
Morpho (Safran group) and Cascade Technologies today announced that they have installed a novel security solution for a field trial at Glasgow Airport. The walk-through portal system allows rapid detection of ‘home-made' explosives and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) in real-time via analysis of air samples, without using ionizing radiation or capturing passenger images.
The solution is the first outcome of a partnership initiated in early 2009 between Morpho and Cascade Technologies. Already deployed for the detection, measurement and monitoring of gases in industrial processes and emissions, the technology has been tested for IED/explosives detection since 2005 following the July 2005 London terrorist attacks, with support from the UK government. It presents unique capabilities for gas detection in terms of measurement speed and discrimination and is well suited for airport security checkpoints which require high convenience and low false alarm standards.
Iain Howieson, Managing Director of Cascade Technologies said: "We have partnered very closely with Morpho over the past couple of years and are excited at the prospect of working alongside them to develop a new domain of applications for our unique technology and to see the first results of this work getting to the field."
Jean-Paul Jainsky, Chairman and CEO of Morpho, commented: "We are very pleased with this partnership and to have now reached trial stage with a major airport operator such as BAA. The combination of Cascade Technologies' expertise with our leading detection technologies, through our subsidiary Morpho Detection, will contribute to our cutting-edge range of airport control security solutions."
Morpho, a high-technology company in the Safran group, is one of the world's leading suppliers of identification, detection and e-document solutions. Morpho is specialized in personal rights and flow management applications, in particular based on biometrics, a sector in which it is the world leader, as well as secure terminals and smart cards.
Through its subsidiary Morpho Detection, Morpho supplies explosives and narcotics and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) detection systems for government, military, air and ground transportation, first responder, critical infrastructure and other high-risk organizations. Morpho's integrated systems and equipment are deployed worldwide and contribute to the safety and security of transportation, data, people and countries.
Cascade Technologies uses its revolutionary, patented core technology – based around the application of Quantum Cascade Lasers – to design, develop and supply innovative solutions in gas analysis for industral emissions, process optimisation, trace level applications and defence. Based at Castle Business Park in Stirling, Cascade Technologies currently has world-class scientists and engineers working under development and supply agreements on several revolutionary products for key blue chip clients, whilst further bespoke product development, manufacturing, marketing and distribution agreements are being sought with customers worldwide. The company's technology provides highly specific and sensitive measurement, whilst its portable size offers cost savings compared to competitive offerings. It is also immune to many outside influences that typically affect sensors of this type.
